Nature in Extremadura

In the XIX century and first part of XX century, Extremadura was a region with a very limited level of industrialization. Also, the population density in the area is very low. Those factors have allowed that many zones of Extremadura have preserved the original nature for centuries and traditional farming lands, mainly the vast expanse of wood pastures called dehesas.

Extremadura is the region of Western Europe with the highest percentage of Important Bird Areas, so it is the perfect place for birdwatching.

Monfragüe National Park

The National Park of Monfragüe is located between Navalmoral de la Mata, Plasencia and Trujillo, it is one of the most important ornithological zones in Spain. In this amazing enviroment, imperial eagles, black vultures, and tawny vultures fly over the park.

Cornalvo Natural Park

Holm oaks and cork oaks surround the Roman dam of Cornalvo which was built over Albarregas river, and whose purpose was to supply Augusta Emerita (Mérida) with water.

Los Barruecos natural park

The Natural monument of Los Barruecos is composed of large granite stones on the edge of ponds. The Vostell Museum is located inside the park, in a 18th Century woolen washing place.

Villuercas Ibores Jara Geopark

The Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark is extraordinarily rich in natural heritage including protected birds, biodiversity corridors, monumental trees, and Biosphere Reserves.

La Serena, land of plains and water

The richness of this natural area lies in its historical legacy and its delicious gastronomy. Livestock farming is the main activity in this charming land which shows their best to become a magic memory.

Don Benito, Villanueva Medellin and Guadiana river

Guadiana is one of two big rivers that flow through Extremadura lands. This zone is called _Vegas of Guadiana_ because the lands are very fertile in the proximity of the Guadiana river in this area.

Great Bustard - The queen of plains

It is the european heaviest bird and the biggest flying bird. Some of the biggest males weighing up to 20kg. Extremadura holds about 25% of the spanish great bustard population, that is about the 15% of Earth population.

Llerena in the south east land

The wide zones of dehesas and smooth mountain ranges are the perfect place for birds like the great bustard or the crane.

Siberia in Spain

The crane (Grus grus) in Extremadura

Every winter, about 75.000 cranes goes to Extremadura. This region is nowadays the main winter habitat for the european crane. Cranes cover in three weeks 3.000 kilometers from their nesting habitats in the North of Europe.
